The main antagonist in 07-Ghost. He is a coldblooded killer, yet high ranking officer in the Barsburg Military.
Not much is known about Ayanami's past. All that is revealed is that he was born in a noble family, and is often disliked by his colleagues. Ayanami is seemingly respected, calm, and cold. Officers greet him with salutes and respect, but often talk about him behind his back. Ayanami's rank is Cheif Of Staff, and he is leader of the Black Hawks (his personal squad).
Ayanami holds great pride and nationalism for his country, despite appearing to care little for the world around him. Ayanami carries out his tasks with seemingly little regard for the life of his subordinates. This is, in fact, proven wrong. As when Kuroyuri says he will sacrifice himself for Ayanami, Ayanami refuses to let Kuroyuri do so.
Ayanami job, and obsession is toying with Teito Klein, the church, and getting his hands on both the Eye of Mikhail and the Eye of Raphael. Ayanami, and his own personal squad (Black Hawks), seek out to retrieve Teito Klein and ultimately the Eye of Mikhail. During this evoloution Ayanami and the Black Hawks' brutality is further displayed as they physically and mentally torture Mikage, and replace half his soul with that of a Kor. This forces Teito and Zehel to kill Mikage, as one cannot save the soul of a part Kor. In this event, Ayanami confirms his suspicious of Teito's past, and begins to chase Teito down even more vigorously.
Ayanami is also the man who killed Teito Klein's father, also known as the King of the Raggs Kingdom. Ayanami, at the time, did not know the importance of Teito, but the heir to the Raggs thrown was still kept close to the military and the Cheif of Staff. Due to his Involvement in the Raggs and Barsburg war, he is fluent in the language of the Raggs Kingdom, and has an obsession with the Eye Of Mikhail and the Eye of Raphael, seeing as they hold great power.
In chapter 47, it is later revealed that Ayanami is the reincarnation of Verloren, such as the bishops are of the Seven Ghosts. Ayanami confirms Labrador's suspicious, and claims he wants his body and powers back (supposedly Verloren's body rests in the Seventh District). Ayanami continues to explain that the Seven Ghosts are in fact fragments of Verloren and he wants them back too. A whole other side of the story of the Seven Ghosts is revealed, ultimately changing the perspective on the Ghosts and Verloren.
