A young boy called Aang is the Avatar who must master all four elements and bring peace to the land.

The Set up

In a world where clans and tribes dot landscape, there are many powerful people. Focused on spiritual enlightenment, and the art of "bending elements," the impossible becomes possible. The most notable clans are the Airbenders, Earthbenders, Firebenders, and Waterbenders. Though, even amongst these, the most powerful is that of "The Avatar"
 
Possessing great power and limitless potential, the avatar is a force that attempts to balance and protect the world. This avatar is no mere person, but is a concept eternal. As one Avatar passes, another individual "becomes" the next avatar, tasked with their great work. Also, the cycle of rebirth is random in person, but methodical in order, rotating from clan to clan (I.E. as Fire Avatar dies, a Wind Avatar is born.)
 

The Rise of the Fire Lord, and the Fall of the Airbenders

This is exactly where the series starts. 100 years prior to the normal time line of the series, our protagonist Aang is a 12 year old Airbender in training. Unbeknown to most of the world, the Fire Lord Sozin (leader of his people) attempted to take over the world. As is his lot, the Avatar of the fire clan rose up and stopped the tyrant. Unfortunately, while he succeeded in stopping Sozin, the Avatar fell, and Aang became the next Avatar. 
 
Slightly unwilling, and incredibly overwhelmed, Aang runs away from the revelation of his new destiny. While traveling with his animal guide Appa, Aang ends up in a fierce storm, which results in the pair being frozen in a glacier for 100 years.
 
Meanwhile, bent on destroying the cycle of Avatars that thwarted his plans, Sozin decides to wage war on the Airbending nation. He succeeds in eradicating the entire clan, save Aang, the "last airbender." 

Current Day

Aang is happened upon by two siblings of the southern clan of waterbenders. Katara and Sokka tell Aang of the war 100 years ago, and he sets about to avenge his clan and fulfill his duty by destroying the fire nations army. He sets about to achieve this goal by first mastering all four bending techniques, a task that would lead him down many misadventures and complications.
