Eren ain't happy.
Eren ain't happy.

One of my favorite parts of the holiday season are marathons of THE TWILIGHT ZONE. Every time I think I'm done (because I've seen three episodes in a row where Hitler somehow returns to power), I'll hear that eerie guitar riff and Rod Serling's smooth baritone, and I'll just need to see what the next horrible vision of the future.

So, let's take a journey, you and me. A journey into a land of both light and shadow, of order and chaos, of speculation and substance! Journey with me into a world where...

ATTACK ON TITAN is cancelled.

PUT DOWN YOUR SHOTGUNS, PLEASE! I'm not saying it HAS been canned, I'm just wondering what would become of the show would such a thing to occur. In the grand scheme of things, how would it affect the legacy of the show?

TITAN would be bound to fall in line with some of the greats of action anime, regardless of its story completion. The ideas they present are wonderfully illustrated through visual metaphors, and the steampunk Spider-Man thing that the people do is more badass than most anything you see in American-style action stories. A lot of new franchises will probably steal from these motifs, since TITAN executed them so well.

Fans would undoubtedly speculate on where things were going to go. Fan theories would inevitably turn into fan fictions, and soon enough an enormous tree of possibilities and universe would grow. Each would vie for validation in the eyes of the fandom and, perhaps more importantly, the crew of the show. Would they ever respond? And would the fandom accept their explanations after the fact?

Perhaps the fandom response would be so powerful that it would have a sort of "FIREFLY Effect," wherein continued pestering of the creatives would convince people with money to reinvest in the show, but in a different way. A movie instead of a new season, perhaps, which would allow for some awesome fights between titan and human while keeping the stakes high.

Finally, I'm sure most people would simply jump ship onto the manga. That's still going strong!

While, thankfully, we don't have to worry about this scenario anytime soon, it's fun to speculate about things like this sometimes. What would YOU do ATTACK ON TITAN was cancelled? Give us a shout in the talkback below! We promise not to call you crazy.

I really enjoyed it but I have pretty much no anticipation for the follow-up. It will be years before it comes anyways. I've already lost any giddiness for new episodes after only one season. Give it a year and I'll probably have forgotten about the series completely.

Don't think I would care much. It was not really interesting how the story was being handled, even though it did have some great ideas, great animation, and was generally pretty enjoyable. But after reading that the mangaka had considered an ending where all the characters died (which is as trite/unoriginal as a deus ex machina "happy ending"), I lost faith in almost any potential left for the story and some of the themes it was exploring. The anime ended up using lots of exaggeration, character archetypes/tropes and typical action-melodrama, to tell the story and fill up the 25ep first season.. So I wouldn't set my hopes too high for second season, and it wouldn't be a priority for me to watch.

But then again I'm always open to being surprised. He could make such an apocalyptic ending work, but from the way the story was going I find it hard to see how that might happen effectively.

I go with sickVisionz. Right now, it's best to wait for the manga to end or to get far ahead before a 2nd season would start. The first season suffer from pacing issues, a common burden that most manga based anime adaptations face. Plus, Attack on Titan has so much hype. It wouldn't be forgotten, and it's still making tons of money.

Let's not go there......

I'd shrug and carry on reading the manga. The anime community would lose out, but at least I found continue following the story.

Looks like you answered your own question!

I'd be more excited to hear a second season had been confirmed first. I don't think something can be cancelled before it's confirmed to continue in the first place. Not that I'm under the impression that there won't be a second season, but it's a long way off yet.

I don't think so, judging by the amount and nature of the comments this is a good conversational article. Something we could use more of for sure. Not that Tom's posts aren't conversational, but posing a question for the community to chime in on seems like a good idea.

Well, it would be really stupid if it was cancelled considering how good it did. I would be bummed if it was, it was in my top 3 anime of 2013.

The story is still hanging at the point where the colossal Titan hasn't appeared in the story. It would be great if Eren could fight him in his Titan form. In addition, Annie is still sealed in that indestructible block of ice- will she emerge and raise hell, or be stuck there eternally? The much-anticipated answers lie in the next series of anime.
