NOTE FOR ANYBODY PAYING ATTENTION: this write-up was done before the most recent Vice Pit episode where Sam and I talked about ATTACK ON TITAN. Like I said I would last time, I went ahead and watched this episode immediately after I finished the previous one. Little did I know that such a significant twist was coming…

It’s clear now that people behind this show are just diabolically good about misleading, confounding and otherwise manipulating audience expectations. They lulled me into a false sense of safety with the first episode, then wrenched me around with a legitimate surprise, and they’ve just done it all over again in only a few episodes.

Seriously, the sucker punch of Eren’s death hits your gut that much harder because he was poised in such a rousing cliffhanger last time. Our hero was going to seize his revenge, man! He’d hopped right over to a high point of conflict! We were going some righteous retribution dealt out over an episode-long duel!

I doubt it’s an accident that this plot ‘leapt without looking’ in the same rapid, breathless fashion as the guardsmen’s high-speed pursuit across town. The show probably isn’t making the sort of cruel, snarky comment on enlistment as, say… the STARSHIP TROOPERS movie, but there is some significance to the fact that Eren misses the one, crucial giant while he’s racing off in a rage to avenge his fallen comrade. I wasn’t taking notes when the one sergeant listed the strengths and weakness of the various guardsmen during that one training exercise, but Eren’s breakdown probably should’ve mentioned how he was passionate to a fault. There’s more to keeping cool than just being unafraid to act, of course, and it’s an all-too-fitting tragedy that this young hero would have the courage to rise to the occasion on his first mission, but not the steeliness to stay aware of his surroundings.

Wow… I’m breaking down the details because I’m still trying to make sense of what just happened. I sit here in disbelief! ATTACK ON TITAN just axed its main character with its fifth episode! One of the supporting characters might be the real protagonist here? Maybe? I’m scared to predict anything, now...

Watch this episode, " First Battle - Battle of Trost" here and decide for yourself, then read my write-up on the previous episode here.

I think you're jumping to conclusions about Eren's "death". This episode never confirms that Eren is dead and there are far too many unanswered questions. Don't forget that the plot already foreshadowed something mysterious about Eren when they showed his father injecting him with something. We also don't know what's in the basement.

Unless the writer insists that Eren is dead many times over I am going to assume there is more to this tragedy than the audience is supposed to know right now.

I'll definitely give Attack on Titan credit for being able to build suspense. These first five episodes have had more suspense than entire seasons of other action shows that end up just being bland.

Good shows, one should not be able to predict with ease whats up next along the plot line.Great shows you forget to predict an just enjoy the ride. After the rides over you can look back an feel more of a let down or increased joy over what happened.

This show has had more wild spoilers on other sites than any i can think of .Highly recomend watching then reading the watch an learn here.Thats my habit now. Other wise should you risk the coment waters your risking drowning in spolier hell.

That said some hints are available in past episodes about Eren . But with so much shown in so few episodes its well hiden in plain sight. At this point even if the show turned lame It stil would make my above average list just because these 5 shows were excelent .

Also of note STARSHIP TROOPERS an V for Vendetta "political comentary" funny how time changes those same points upon those who comented them against others. Most people that i know do not know their "creators" intent so they aply their own opion to the show.An oddly enuff its not what the movie "makers" comment on the then enlistment goverment or other wise.

Lets say Sams theory of the giants are anime fans devouring the creators ... is actualy what the creators intended.Eh i could care less.Ill still enjoy the story as is not as intended. After all the road to hell is paved with good intentions right?

I don't think there's been as shocking a twist as the one that happened in this episode. Even episode 8 of Gurren Lagaan wasn't this shocking, because the actual main character did not die.

There are only a handful of anime that have had this shocking a death. I forget the name of the anime, but I think that it was a mecha show from the 90s, and they kill off who you think is the series cast, and replace them all. I never saw it, but it reminds me of Titan's giant brass balls.

EPISODE 7!!

@Lurkero: Can you blame someone for jumping to conclusions? Even if he was alive, his arm and leg are gone: massive blood loss. Also, he's being digested by a Titan.

The show really surprised me when Eren gets eaten by a Titan at the end. Since the body hasn't been seen, it's up for debate whether he did die or not. I can't say anything else because of spoilers.

I love how Eren gave an inspirational speech, and then hell breaks loose. Everyone dies in Armin's squad. It shows that not everyone is safe which includes fan favorites such as the little potato girl.

In a way, it's like I'm trying to evade giant, lumbering monsters with some sort of climbing gear....

GA-REI-ZERO killed off the whole cast int he first episode... but that WAS still a prequel.

"Little potato girl" sounds like a comic strip from the 30's. Haha.

@No_name_here: In a way yes. But you cant discuss this episode with out talikng about Eren an his um quick time taste event.Where as on many a board on episode 1 they lay out spoilers like candy at holloween.Full of razor blades an posion to as some use the spoilers to get people to watch their show an not this one.

The title of these threads should be enuff for people to watch 1st then read comentary an not worry of spoilers because you watched an now learn a difrent opion. As a genral rule i never have felt these threads here have spoiled a show for me.Seriously have thank you for that.

Also as side note this comunity is awsome. Was reading some comic sites last night.Fairly filled with arch types bitter an mean trollish comments. Here we can disagre an still discuss things even when we disagree. To all the people who make the site possible Thank You ! As soon as im ahead a bit on cash got plans set on being a memeber.

@Marshal Victory:

I welcome anyone on the wiki project for Attack on Titan. I'm been doing it solo. Though, I do see Olgaphone, Sonata, and Shels updating the character pages. I thank them for their contributions.
