Whenever we get to the end of this season, I might have a clearer notion of what exactly this show does to keep us coming back, week after week, even when we seem to spend most of the time complaining. It continues to be a show that’ll always take six minutes to say something that could’ve been said in just one, and boy, was I ready to write this episode off for just that (Eren’s discussion with his comrades in the treetops being just painfully drawn out).

However, the needle on the Rock-or-Suck meter hoped all the way across the dial in the second half. I continue to be impressed by the moments where TITAN is able to have its cake and eat it, too - - underlying superheroic, fantasy action with the white-knuckle tension and visceral mood of a horror thriller. There’s just such a tight escalation, ratcheting up from the realistically-cruel torture that Levi’s team inflicts on the Female Titan to the rush of reinforcements she summons with her bloodcurdling distress call.

(Though, like I’ve said, I guess I’m just a sucker for all the times this show takes a procedural approach to its fantasy - - applying an unflinching, morbid attention to detail on the order of a kid peeling apart a fly with a pair of tweezers).

It may have tested the old disbelief suspension to have the guardsman getting to chitchat over such a long and smooth sail through the tree tops at the end, sure, but damn if the twist about Female Titan’s disguise didn’t make for one hell of a cliffhanger. Even though we’ve seen a seemingly endless number of guardsmen introduced, there actually aren’t too many suspects who could’ve been piloting the creature at this point. Still, I need to know the answer to this mystery… and perhaps that really is what keeps us coming back, despite anything else.

Watch this episode, "Erwin Smith -- 57th Expedition Beyond the Walls" here and decide for yourself, then read my write-up on the previous episode here.

I feel like this is going to spiral into government conspiracy. Did this titanformer (suck it, Michael Bay) get that outfit and gear from a dead soldier, or does it belong to her? Swinging around the forest with the greatest of ease takes training, so the latter is more likely.

Would a soldier blatantly defect from the military and go live with the titans? NAH! The fix has to be in!! If the fix is in, that means the secret of humans as titans has been out for a while, and Eren's mad scientist papa might've made a prototype.

Now here's a question for people who are playing along like I am, not knowing what lies ahead: is the pilot of this titan even a female? Hmm??? Do you have to be female to transform into one?

@YotaruVegeta: As someone who hasn't read the manga, I think the production team on the anime is making it blatantly obvious who the female titan is. That, or they are doing their best to make it seem like it's obvious. That person being the female titan would also strongly support the idea of a government conspiracy.

I can't be the only one that sees it, right? Everywhere I look, people are avoiding mentioning the elephant in the room (or even speculating about it) for fear of being spoiled. It seems pretty clear to me that it's Annie.

At this point its obvious that humans have the capability to generate (or turn into) titans, but the frequency of the aberrant attacks is so low that I cannot fathom what the goal is.

Because Titan got so popular I am hoping that a second season is already in the planning stages. I wouldn't want the anime to deviate from the manga too much.

OMG the next episode...legendary..i almost pee'd my pants. And about who the female titan is..i don't read the manga either. but im pretty sure im 85 percent certain of who it is. her eyes and the titans eyes are soo similar if its not her than I guess im wrong. that doesn't even take the excitement away I wanna know who what when and why about the female titan.

There's not nearly enough material for another season of similar length, let alone beginning to plan for one, at this point. 2 years at the most is needed. This season looks like it's gonna end at chapter 33-35, and the manga is only at 48. It's possible if they cut it down to 12-13 episode seasons, though, if they want to do one a year.

@Lurkero: The goal of sending titans to attack, I think, is to keep those in power comfortably seated in their positions, or to keep humanity away from whatever's deep in the larger world. Or it could be both!

It focuses on one or two important plot reveals and/or "shock/action" scenes per episode. I read some spoilers, so I already know who the red titans are, including the female titan. But still I want to see how it all unfolds.

@AURON570:

Same here. In my situation, a wiki editor PM me the spoilers about the identities of each of the Titans by accident when I asked about the aliases.

I just created Titan concept pages to protect people from being spoiled if they read the character wiki pages.

Episode 21 had the most action I seen for a while in this series. No more stalling with these discussions and trusting each other. Looks like Erwin knows what is going to happen when he told Levi to fill up on gas.

Can not agree more with the " suck it, Michael Bay" part . Tho if its a dead soilders cloths it would be covered in blood .So thats a no go .Unless they (titan pilots) can absorb blood.

Far as the conspiracy goes we have 4 known factions.The goverement,The two branches of the military,an the church.Logicaly of those 4 which one tired to get Eren exicuted the most?An that one would be my guess.

@AURON570: Red titans? Maybe I shouldn't ask this question. You know too much!

@Marshal Victory: You can kill someone without making them bleed. Or, you can leave them alive, but incapacitate them.

@YotaruVegeta: True ture didnt think of her killing off screen an carefuly to.But then again her cloaths would not disaove in the " Meat Mech" that are titans. Only thing i see if the gear goes poof which she could double back an get from the ones she killed on screen to.

Which would make bit more scense to .Other wise she wuld have to knwo when she was gona get ambushed an where an then store gear?Bit of a streach.

Post by YotaruVegeta (608 posts) See mini bio Level 12

@Marshal Victory: There is nowhere for the female titan to hide the gear. She did not expect to get ambushed at that spot.

We'll learn soon enough how it all happens, but it feels tricky that you can carry all the maneuver gear in the titan, and while the titans are eating the titan flesh, escape. These are aberrant titans, after all. How do you avoid being eaten by them all?

@Marshal Victory: @YotaruVegeta:

Government conspiracy is a little off the chart for this series. Anything's on the table, I guess. Maybe all these Titans are all humans, and they going to take over Eren's homeland. I
