Five years pass after that fateful summer. Edmund Dantes and Fernand Morcerf are now dead. Haydee lives in Janina with the Count of Monte Cristo's former servants and prepares for her coronation. The peace treaty with the Eastern Empire is finally signed. Maximillien returns home to his wife Valentine in Marseilles. Albert visits the abandoned Morcerf home and Franz's grave and rushes to the church where he hears Eugenie playing the piano.
