Asuna News

Asuna is a anime/manga character in the Sword Art Online franchise

Welcome vicers. I have finished the first half of Sword Art Online and want to take a moment to reflect on the series, the highs, the lows, and my hopes going into the second half of the season. Before I begin I just want to remind those reading that there will be spoilers ahead though I will try and minimize those.

Despite playing video games since I was 5 years old there have been several genres that do not fall within my wheelhouse. One of them is the MMORPG. Time commitments and financial constraits have prevented me from enjoying them in the past. However, even though I haven't played them I do enjoy the appeal of playing in a massive world with thousands of other players. Also the idea of not just playing a game but being part of one where all of your senses are completely immersed in the game is a great idea. I also have not watched the .hack series. So I went into this show with a curious sense of optimism. SAO is a show in which a new MMORPG has emerged and through the use of a new device called the NerveGear players are able to be completely immersed within the game. All goes well until the players realize that they cannot log out of the game. The game creator then notifies them that they are trapped in the game and the only way to escape is to beat the final boss. The protagonist is Kirito a solo player. He meets many people along the way including a girl named Asuna. Initially they are at odds with one another but slowly develop a close friendship eventually falling in love with each other. By the end of the first half of the show they manage to discover the secrets of the game including the final boss, and the motivations of the creator to do what he did and in the end they beat the game and escape.

As always I want to talk about the things I like before I lay my criticisms. My biggest compliment to the show is the animation and art style. This world is very well realized and is an absolute joy to look at. The simple idea that people can be transported to a world like that is very exciting. Even if the monster or boss design is not as unique as it could have been they are animated so well it more than makes up for it. The fight with the chimera in particular was really fun to watch. There are also some concepts that are interesting and I wish could have been expanded on further. Games like EVE Online have shown that virtual worlds can be intricate and that game contains entire corporations built by players and a very advanced economy system. In SAO the intricacies of guilds and their political and social complexities are teased but never really expanded upon which I found both interesting and disappointing.

Unfortunately I also had a lot of issues with the show. While it was fun to look at the story did not hold up. The first few episodes feel very chaotic with no through line other than the main character. Characters such as Sachi, Yui, and Liz are introduced and immediately removed or thrown to the side within one episode. I guess they exist to evolve Kirito and explain some of his reasons for being a solo character but despite this I still found him a rather simplistic character lacking any great deal of depth. It was fairly refreshing to see Asuna in a more empowered role rather than being a damsel in distress she is a very capable and confident woman which is refreshing. However, the chemistry and romance between the two was simple and predictable. This was disappointing given how much time the show devoted to their romance.

One great thing about games is that they offer escapism and allow us to become empowered characters in a fantastical world. If you could truly envelop your senses in that world would you return to reality? What if you were a high lord with a vast kingdom under your rule in a virtual world but a lowly employee at a company in the real world? Which life would you chose? As I grow older my expectations in the media I consume grows. While I still enjoy simple mindless entertainment I appreciate art that challenges my views and helps me to see the world in a deeper and better way. Maybe its not fair to level my own expectations as complaints against SAO. The show still has potential to grow and offer more than what it has showed me. Here's hoping it does.

Hey fellow Vicers! ARD here to great you guys A HAPPY NEW YEAR! and happy new year indeed since this is a Very Great news. Last 2012 in december, I made a discussion about a Rumor regarding Season 2 of SAO already confirmed. For those who want to read here is the link (Rumor: Sword art online Season 2! Already Confirmed?) . And after many research it was actually just a thing to hype fans more but it wasn't true. Come 2013 the Anime Attack on Titan took the floor and shined being anime of the year. Now as 2013 past by, A show called Log Horizon came out with hilarious results with flame wars comparing to Sword art online. Yes I Do admit that sword art online was so controversial that it had sides that people who like the show and another hating on it, but to me i like sword art and i consider it my top list of favorite animes.

Now having to watch the the extra edition of sword art online, I really do miss watching the show with Kirito and Asuna with the others to recall the whole season 1 (The plot of the extra edition is just a recall of Sao and Alfhiem and yui seing a whale). In the i watched until the end to see after credits and hope to see a trailer and yup i expectations are right. Season 2 is confirmed.

Choo Choo! Lets Ride the HYPE TRAIN cause this is the start of an amazing year!

The Trailer just shows Sinon reloading her massive sniper rifle and confirms 2014 is Sword art online year. Aniplex of America is streaming the same trailer on its official YouTube channel.

Tomohiko Ito will again direct the series at A-1 Pictures, and Shingo Adachi will again adapt abec's original character designs for animation.

Sword Art Online II will launch in 2014. The announcement was made during Tuesday's premiere of the Sword Art Online: Extra Edition special and on the franchise's updated website. The website gives the new arc the subtitle "Phantom Bullet." More details will be announced on the site at a later date.

The phantom bullet arc is considered by fans to be the most interesting arc and being the best story overall compared to Both SAO and ALO since Gun Gale or GGO focuses on guns more than swords.

What do you guys think? Will 2014 be the year Sword Art makes a comeback or will another show rise to top and compete against SAO. Comment down below to what you think. Anyways thanks for reading and ARD wishes you guys a Happy new year.

Inspired by the Sword Art Online discussion and the trailer blog that we have in Anime Vice, .Hack is a topic that came up recently. I was interested about the show and what it had in common with Sword Art Online.

Now, I'm a Sword Art Online fan who has no prior knowledge of the .Hack series which is massive. Feel free to correct me in this discussion. I will add everyone's input in this blog. Please help promote the discussion. All comments are welcome.

First off, let's introduce the franchises.

Sword Art Online

Technological innovation named Nerve Gear allows players to enter virtual world, achieving the true immersion. Soon after the invention of Nerve Gear, beta invitations of MMO named Sword Art Online are sent to numerous players. The game was fun to play until player realized that they cannot log out of the game. Suddenly creator of Sword Art Online appears and announces that everybody in the game are trapped within, until they defeat boss at top of dungeon.

Via Anime Vice

.Hack

This franchise that first started out as a video game has spawn multiple video game, anime, and manga adaptations.

Note: I don't have the overall plot of the franchise, so I list a few anime series.

.Hack//Sign

.hack starts in a fictional 2005, introducing a computer virus called Pluto's Kiss as the cause of a massive Internet shutdown.[11] The results are described as catastrophic:[12] traffic lights shut down, planes collide in midair, and the United States' nuclear missiles are nearly launched. As a consequence, cyberspace is subjected to severe restrictions. The virus affects all operating systems except for one, Altimit OS, the only operating system immune to all computer viruses.

Via Wikipedia

.Hack//Legend of the Twilight

Winning the legendary characters “Kite” and “Black Rose” from an event held by the creators of the MMORPG ‘The World,’ Shugo and his twin sister Rena steps into ‘The World’. Together they completed events and quests, along with their new friends Ouka, Mirelle, Hotaru and Sanjuro. Soon after, mysterious monsters appeared, and death by these monsters caused players to slip into a coma in the real world. Only Shugo and Rena can solve this problem, but why are they being targeted, and what secrets is the game hiding?

Via MyAnimeList

.Hack//Roots

After the destruction of "The World" in 2015, CC Corporation rebuilt the game using data from what was previously to be another game. "The World R:2" was then released in 2016. A newcomer to the game, Haseo, is instantly PKed and then revived by a mysterious man known as Ovan. With the problem of PKs occupying the game, Haseo soon after receives help from a female Harvest known as Shino. Amidst curiosity and confusion, Haseo is lead to joining the guild known as the Twilight Brigade. The guild that searches for the legendary object known as the "Key of the Twilight". Set before the .hack//G.U. game.

Similarities

Unlike the Sket Dance and Gintama Similarities and Differences blog, the characters in both series are going to be hard to put down similarities, so I decided to just put down the overall details.

Beware of Spoilers!

  • Both shows are set in massive virtual MMORG worlds.
  • Player Killings are present in both series
  • Like Kirito and Asuna of Sword Art Online who have a romantic relationship, Aura and Kite have an romantic relationship.
  • Races: Only in Sword Art Online's ALFheim world, there are multiple races just like .Hack's races.
  • Guilds: Both SAO and .Hack have concept due to being MMORGs. However, the guild system in .Hack is more complex and intricate.

Differences

Beware of Spoilers!

  • Protagonists: Sword Art Online has one main protagonist, Kirito. Compared to .Hack, there are multiple protagonists with their own stories: Kite, Tsukasa, Sakuya, and Aura.
  • Sword Art Online has three main arcs while .Hack is more massive with multiple side stories.
  • Regions: It appears that .Hack encompasses the world. (I could be wrong here). For Sword Art Online, the franchise is concentrated in Japan.
  • Antagonists: In .Hack, it's Morgianna, an AI like Aura. For Sword Art Online, it's two male characters: Akihiko Kayaba and Sugou Nobuyuki who are human and control only one world.
  • Earlier we said .Hack started out as a video game, Sword Art Online started out as a web novel.
  • Artificial Intelligence: So far, the only AI seen in Sword Art Online is Yui while in .Hack, there are AI, Vagrant AIs, and the Ultimate AI. .Hack is more involved with these beings.

Buhssuht's Comment

My teammate, Buhssuht, has some awesome thoughts for us.

  • While the chaos in SAO is caused by creator alone, the abnormality in .hack is cause by mysterious entity, creating programs that breaks all the rule of programming and real world
  • .hack concentrate on game known as The World, but in SAO franchise the main characters move on to different game
  • No offense, but SAO is more of harem series. .hack is more of... adolescence of teenager for lack of better terms.

Characters

Even though I don't know the characters well in .Hack, I look up their personalities and relationships of several characters in spite of spoilers. I find two characters in .Hack that have some common ground with Kirito and Asuna.

Sword Art OnlineSimilarities and Differences.Hack
Kirito
Kirito
  • Interesting enough, both couples (Kirito X Asuna and Kite X Aura) share the same first letter in their names.
  • Both Kirito and Kite have this mentality to help others in need of help.
  • Both Kirito and Kite are professional duel wielders. For Kite, some of his blades are invisible.
  • Kirito is passionate in computers while Kite enjoys reading science fiction books.
Kite
Kite
Asuna
Asuna
  • Asuna is a real girl while Aura is an Artificial Intelligence (AI) being.
  • Both Asuna and Aura are deemed to be perfect in one area. For Aura, she is built to be the ultimate AI. In Asuna's case, she is somewhat of a Mary Sue (from fans) because of her beauty and strength.
  • Aura is the keystone in keeping "The World" stable. Without her, the virtual world will collapse. Asuna is just a mere girl with no significant powers over SAO.
  • Hobby-wise: It seems that Asuna enjoys cooking, and I don't know what Aura likes given the fact she is an AI.
Aura
Aura

This is all I have so far. Thank you for reading and contributing to the discussion.

A lot of Sword Art Online fans notice the so-called platonic harem in Sword Art Online. Originally, I was going to call this blog, Platonic Harem: Sword Art Online. However, I was unsure about if it's a harem or not, so I titled it different.

Sword Art Online
Sword Art Online

Here's a synopsis written by Buhssuht

Technological innovation named Nerve Gear allows players to enter virtual world, achieving the true immersion. Soon after the invention of Nerve Gear, beta invitations of MMO named Sword Art Online are sent to numerous players. The game was fun to play until player realized that they cannot log out of the game. Suddenly Akihiko Kayaba, the creator of Sword Art Online appears and announces that everybody in the game are trapped within, and cannot leave the game until they defeat boss at top of dungeon, and if they were to remove Nerve Gear by force before defeating the final boss or die within the game, they would permanently die in real world. As parting gift, Akihiko leave mirrors to each players, which reveals players' real face causing more panic. Among them is a boy named Kirito, who determines to reach the final dungeon and leave the game no matter what.

Spoilers!

Welcome to the Sword Art Online Romance Edition where we talk about the girls who have a thing for Kirito. This blog covers Episodes 1 to 10. Don't read this until you finished episode 10 because something special happens in Kirito's relationship with one of the girls.

Let the discussion begin!

Kirito

Kirito is your main player and a bit of a lone wolf who avoids joining guilds due to a tragic end to his first guild. Though, his lone wolf self does not stop him from getting the ladies.

Asuna

Asuna is at first a reclusive girl, but when she becomes the Vice Commander of the Knights of the Blood Oath, she is seen as the perfect girl. She is called the White Flash known for her lightning speed, and she is one of the best cooks in the game. Kirito just loves her cooking.

Relationship: They are a cliche pair. She beats him for being perverted, and the two argue a lot on tactics. Despite that, the two get along fine and eat together. For those who watched episode 10, Kirito makes his move and asks her to marry which she accepts. Does this mean that rest of the girls don't have a chance? Maybe but it's up to fans to decide.

Sachi

I know she's dead by now, but a lot of people support this relationship. Sachi won the hearts of many fans with her tragic death and her little Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer message to Kirito.

Relationship: Despite she's dead, Kirito does think about her. When he married Asuna, he probably moved on.

Silica

Silica is a pretty loli girl and a monster tamer, and she attracts many admirers who wants her as their mascot for their guild. It's implied that she has a thing for Kirito. Though, she sees him as a big brother since Kirito explains he saved her because Silica reminds him of his cousin.

Relationship: They're like older brother and sister right now. Silica has not made a move on Kirito.

Lisbeth

Lisbeth is a young blacksmith who is Asuna's friend. She is looking for something in her life, and then Kirito appears to asks her to forge a sword. It was an awkward yet cute start of their strange relationship, and they sleep near each other in front of the campfire. It was a touching scene where Lisbeth realizes that Kirito is the one for her. Lisbeth is the first girl to confess to Kirito that she "like" him. She asked Kirito to let her be his personal blacksmith. Though, she got sad when she sees Asuna and Kirito is awfully close.

Relationship: They are friends.

Suguha Kirigaya
Suguha is Kirito's little sister, but in reality, she is Kirito's cousin. She is a better kendo warrior than Kirito, and she has an avatar in ALFheim Online which Kirito does not know yet.

Relationship: ??? - Kirito sees her as his little sister while Suguha keeps blushing as she thinks more of Kirito.

Thank you for reading this blog.

Warning! The following may contains spoilers so i do recommend watching first Episode 14 : End of the world before reading this

After 2 years on November 7, Sword Art Online is cleared...

Finally the awaited Episode 14 is out and its was a great ending. Although when i woke up almost all the post i saw in Facebook are all spoiler pics of the episode itself but nevertheless its was a awesome experience watching it.

Round 2! Kayaba Akihiko Vs Kirigaya Kazuto
Round 2! Kayaba Akihiko Vs Kirigaya Kazuto

Kirito showed of his smart deducting skills when he realize and revealed to all the Heathcliff is none other the creator Kayaba Akihiko. But made me intrigued was Kayaba stating that he was the final boss on the top floor then kirito added his own saying that it seems pretty bad that the most trusted and strongest player in SAO who becomes the last boss and again Kayaba answered back that its a pretty good storyline. Now that was a good word fight but true essence of the episode was actually not the fight itself but it was but what awaited at the end for us to see and cry upon.

The Final Boss

So this guy trap 10,000 players, made himself also player, and gives himself Immortal status
So this guy trap 10,000 players, made himself also player, and gives himself Immortal status

Something has always bothered me, ever since I arrived here. "Where does he hide while he watches us and adjust the world?" But i'd forgotten a simple piece of psychology. Something any kid knows. There's nothing as boring as watching someone else play an RPG. Isn't that right, Kayaba Akihiko? - Kirito

Since Kirito revealed his identity, Kayaba gave a reward to Kirito a chance to face him one-on-one. Well since he had Immortal status the whole time he would naturally deactivate it if the player where to reach him on the top floor but just like any final boss fight, he would have maximum stats to all attributes then again he's the creator so he would naturally do that kind of thing.

After that Kirito had flashback of those who died in front of him except Yui. Yui just dissapeared but i couldn't help but shed a single tear when i saw Yui. Kirito then prepared himself for his greatest battle yet. Asuna ask him that he isn't gonna die just yet. Then Kirito said that's he going to win. Before the battles start Kirito made a request that Asuna couldn't inflict suicide if kirito would die. Think about it if you die and the girl you love so much kills herself because she couldn't protect you, wouldn't you feel guilty or devastated.

Thus the battle started but if you think the battle sequence was epic wait a few more minutes for the most by far emotional scene i have seen in a action-adventure genre.

The will to fight after losing your hope...

I have to admit. I am one of those who cry at this kind of this scenes
I have to admit. I am one of those who cry at this kind of this scenes

Asuna's death was a total emotional crying scene the whole time. Until now just looking at this scene makes me cry for 5 minutes. So for those who also cried, Big thumbs up and accept it that this scene made you cry. After seeing Asuna fade into pieces of scattered light, Kirito loss all sense of hope and just attacked kayaba like a lifeless soul. kayaba deflected the sword but kirito picked up the sword of asuna. He got stab by kayaba's sword but kirito did not lose hope. He doesn't want Asuna's death to be in vain so with all his might before he fades away he stab him depleting kayaba's life. With that he ask himself if it was good enough while looking at Asuna's sword and eventually he faded to scattered to pieces of light floating above aincrad while all his friends that he met on his journey looked at the sky.

A dream of a castle floating in the skies

You know, Kirito-kun, I still believe that in some other world, that castle truly exist. - Kayaba Akihiko

He explains everything how it all started. He dreams of a castle that can surpass all the law of the world yet he also says that someone already surpass even the laws of Sword Art Online. He must be referring to Kirito and Asuna's actions that even the game itself can't handle such as Yui and Kirito's strong will to kill Kayaba. He congratulates both Kirito and Asuna for clearing the game but before that he initiated a phase that will delete all of SAO's programs including the game itself.

My name is Kirigaya. Kirigaya Kazuto.

Now that's a good ending for a great game
Now that's a good ending for a great game

They both sit as they watched Aincrad fall into pieces and realize that they will disappear. Asuna explains to kirito that its not goodbye and they will disappear together as one. But before that Asuna wants to know Kirito's real name and told hers as well. They exchange there "I Love You" to each other. As they hug a huge light came into contact to them fading them to oblivion ending once and for all there 2 year journey in Sword Art Online.

Waking Up in the Real world...

2 years later...
2 years later...

He wakes up in a hospital and looks at his hand. He tries to remove his helmet then remembered a girl that he met in Sword art Online. The scene was suppose to show that he forgot the name of girl but suddenly remembered that it was Asuna just like the light novel. He tries to get up, removes the nerve gear and walks out of the room uttering his last final words "Asuna..." then the scene shifts to him walking to a corridor going to the light. the credits roll and its over

So what happens now for those who though its over and just close before or after the credits? Well you guys just miss the most greatest thing that happened

Kirito voice can be heard and says the next episode " Jikai: Ritān " I Got super excited that its not over yet and the next arc will be set.

Next Time: Return

So the next arc is set in "Fairy Dance" Arc and Kirito will have to play again another VRMMORPG which is ALfheim Online. Get ready for next Sunday (That's my country day that a Sword Art online Episode is release) So for those who doesn't know about this, tell your friends that Sword Art Online is not over and get hype for the next episode arc.

For those who want to know the New Character i'll tell only one so for those who don't want to be spoiled just skip this.

New Character: Spoiler

Thats Right! Kirigaya Suguha the sister of Kirito will appearing for the first time in episode 15. Actually she was first shown in Episode 1 but her face wasn't that clear enough to be seen so it was more of a cameo

Well thats all what i have to say. Thanks for having the time to read this blog and get ready for Fairy Dance
