One of Ash's most powerful Pokémon, Charizard brings Ash some of the most powerful offensive attacks out of all his Pokemon.
Ash first found Charmander in the episode Charmander the Stray Pokémon. Charmander had been abandoned outside in the rain by a trainer named Damian. With the Charmander's tail severely dimmed from the rain, Ash and his friends nurtured the weak Pokémon back to health. Charmander became one of Ash's most frequently used Pokémon and the two shared a strong bond.
After evolving in the episode March of the Exeggutor Squad, Charmeleon's personality drastically changed. It became more violent and started ignoring Ash's commands.
Charmeleon later evolved into a Charizard to battle an Aerodactyl in the episode Attack of the Prehistoric Pokémon. Unfortunately it's personality didn't change this time and it was still disloyal towards Ash. Charizard would constantly ignore Ash's commands, go to sleep rather than battle, and even torch Ash when it felt like it. The only times Charizard would even act remotely obedient was when it was called into battle against something it felt it could properly test it's strength against, like when it battled Blaine's Magmar for the Volcano Badge. Charizard even caused Ash to forfeit during the Indigo League Championships, while it fought off Ritchie's Charmander, it refused to fight Sparky and Ash could not continue.
It was only in the episode Charizard Chills that Charizard finally gave Ash respect once again and started obeying him. After being frozen by a Poliwrath Ash stayed up all night trying to brake Charizard out of the ice and save it's life. This reminded Charizard of what Ash did for him back when he was an abandoned Charmander.
Ash let Charizard stay in the Charicific Valley, a natural paradise made for wild Charizard. Ash let Charizard stay there to train with Liza, who acts as a sort of caretaker there, and also so that Charizard could be with Liza's Charizard Charla, who Charizard had feelings for. Though Charizard now lives in the Valley, he can be called upon by Ash at any time and has been for some serious battles. Charizard even came back to help Ash in the third Pokémon movie.
