Caterpie

The first Pokémon Ash successfully caught was Caterpie. Ash had Caterpie a total of 20 something minutes because after battling Team Rocket, it evolved to Metapod.

Metapod

In the anime Ash's Metapod was stolen by a Beedrill, Ash eventually recovered it, but was under attack by the Beedrill,To save Ash Metapod leapt in front of him. It's tender body was pierced, however it evolved into Butterfree and defeated the Beedrill.

Butterfree

Butterfree is the final form of Caterpie. In the Anime Series Ash's Metapod evolved into Butterfree after battling a horde of Beedrill. Ash used Butterfree agaisnt Misty in their Pokémon Battle in Cerluean City, however Misty was able to beat it with her Staryu. In a later episode Ash beat a Rich guy's Raticate, after agreeing they liked each other's Pokémon they traded, however Ash regretted it and traded back. In an episode titled "Bye Bye Butterfree" Ash released his Butterfree so it could mate with a Pink Butterfree it had saved from Team Rocket.
