Ann is a girl from Tokyo dealing with the divorce of her parents, her mother's suicide, and the normal ailments of adolescence.
Ann Uekusa is first from the manga series Sand Chronicles by Japanese mangaka Hinako Ashihara, first published by Shojo Beat in 2007. Ann is a nice girl who at the beginning of the series is shown around the age twenty-six and is engaged to be married, soon to move away to a foreign country. While packing her stuff , Ann's eyes are brought to an old hour glass she received as a child from her mother. The hour glass is only a small item obtained from a gift shop but when she was little it meant the world to her. Looking at the hourglass again after so many years recalls the memories of her adolescence, Ann so hard tried to forget. In the story, Ann is then depicted as a teen going through her developing years in the story line. At the tender of age of twelve Ann is stripped from her home in Tokyo by her mother, Mikawo, and taken to the rural town of Shimane where Mikawo was raised. Before this, Mikawo and Ann lived in Tokyo with Ann's father, but his business went down the drain and submerged the family into deep debt. Ann's father then abandoned Ann and Mikawo, which is why Mikawo and Ann moved to Shimane to stay with Mikawo's parents as a last resort. Ann is a strong willed girl , who speaks her minds and isn't afraid of people, but even she feels out of place in the snowy town full of people who were caring and nice. Also Ann's grandmother did nothing but criticize her and her mother, feeling burdened by having more mouths to feed.
