Welcome to the Winter 2014 Season Anime Guide! My teammates, Acura Max & BigHeart711, and I have compiled this list with links to the discussion threads that have the trailers. Please check them out.

Takashichea

There are three series I'm looking forward to this winter season, Silver Spoon season 2, Space Dandy, and Nobunagun. Being a Shonen fan, I admit I wasn't a big slice of life fan, but when I saw Hiromu Arakawa did Silver Spoon, I was interested in. It blew my expectations since it still has that FMA quirks to it. For Nobunagun, I pick it up because of the art style, it's all punkish with a side dish of goth in it. It reminds me of a little of Mushibugyo, with its colorful floral sihouettes. Since I haven't watch any anime series with Oda Nobunaga references, I'll start with this show. Finally, Space Dandy was the show that had so much hype. When I heard Toonami was doing the dub while it was still sub, I was interested in it. As DocHaus quoted, it's like Johnny Bravo in space!

BigHeart711

There are three shows I need to talk about: The first has to be Wooser's Awakening Arc because I ended up having fun with watching the first season, which became a guilty pleasure of mine. While it is more tame than other comedies, Wooser can get really crude and perverted when when prompted, but it mostly ends up being fun. I hope this adds more to it since he's definitely up to absolutely no good this season.

The next is Magical Warfare. Apparently, it's on how some (seemingly shallow) person that ended up being turned into a magician unintentionally thanks to someone he rescued after they were knocked out. It does have the most effective approach to me compared to some the other magic themed series (even though HappinessCharge Pretty Cure, Wizard Barristers and (especially) Sailor Moon's Remake are right up my alley as well) so I'm hoping that I'm not in the wrong over here for either of them.

Finally, I'm going for Pupa. The premise and trailer is already creepy as all hell and from what I've heard, the manga is warped as heck, which I also plan to check out. I still have no clue on whether it will end up being a series of shorts after all, but hopefully, it lives up to all the hype that it's been getting from virtually everyone I know (in real life, too.)

Unfortunately, Acura Max was busy.

This begins Aoba's new life as the pilot of the Free Treaty Alliance against the Great Zogiria Republic.

Yeah, I wasn't too good with banners. I made it too wide. The purple word art wasn't visible. made a cool banner for me. Thanks Dekken! Hope you guys and gals enjoy our guide. Let me know if there is anything wrong. I was searching everywhere for Sailor Moon's trailer. I'm not sure if they will release a Sailor Moon anime remake.

Post by Bigheart711 (3,804 posts) See mini bio Level 21

@takashichea: Actually, I'm not sure about the remake unless the PV ends up being shown in the middle of the season.

The banner that Dekken had ended up looking good. :)

@Bigheart711:

I wanted to make a banner that had shows that you and I had talk or shows that had the most hype. I suck at making banners. I like Dekken's banner because it's simple and visible. I tried doing a Space Dandy banner, but it was hard making transparent PNGs for Dandy and the ones I made were too small and skinny.

On-topic:

Pupa was a show that was rumored to be 5 minutes, but it was pushed to this guide. I'm not sure about Sailor Moon since there is no trailer. Folks are left wondering what happened to the remake? I can't find a publisher on the anime remake.

Shows I'm Enjoying So Far:

  • Space Dandy
  • Nobunagun
  • Pilot's Love Song
  • Super Sonico
  • Tonari

Shows I'm Looking Forward to:

I watched the first episode of Space Dandy, the animation was amazing, but I'm not very interested in it right know.

About the upcoming shows, I'm looking forward Maken-ki! Two, especially knowing that Hiraku Kaneko is the director.

@takashichea: Space Dandy was real fun so far alongside Wooser's Awakening Arc. I was surprised about a certain someone breaking into the internet. I'll leave out exactly who.

So how does everyone feel about this season coming? Personally I think it's a little high school heavy, but I say that every single season. Admittedly I wish there were more serious titles to this list, especially with Pupa being supposedly only 5 minutes, it feels a little devoid of verity.

@Elfenlied1012:

Honestly, nothing stood out except Space Dandy and Pupa. I had to watch a few shows just to see if I like them. In addition to the heavy school themes, there is also a lot of micro series in this season. I think this season had the most micro series. Fall had that vocaloid show: Miss Monochrome while summer had Senyu 2. Winter 2013 had Mangirl.

For short series:

@takashichea:

Kinda the same here except I'm not even all that psyched for space dandy. Not exactly my cup of tea.

@Elfenlied1012:

What shows are you looking forward or which ones are you enjoying now? I'm kind of disappointed in Pupa as you see in the Pupa Discussion. I know Space Dandy is a bit like Kill la Kill with its comedy and T & A. I think I know your tastes in anime somewhat.

Post by Elfenlied1012 (557 posts) See mini bio Level 15

@takashichea:

I'm not looking forward really to anything, more I just appreciate that Pupa and Sakura Trick are being made purely because they are both in dead genres of anime, even if I'm not going to watch them. Literally I feel so starved for something other than high school, fan service, or "So ridiculous you can't not like it" shows I even watched most of golden time PURELY because it was set in college.

The few others that seem different just seem...dumb. -_-

As for me I'm still finishing up Golden Time, Kill la Kill, and compellion (None of which are doing wonders for me), but I finished mental choices which was surprisingly funny, some weird horror OVA series that was great, but I forgot the name of and RWBY, all of which I need to sit down and review

Post by Delphic (48 posts) See mini bio Level 10

@Elfenlied1012: This is really the first time I'm actually tuning in to see anything new coming out. I tend to lean more to older stuff, but I figure I would try this out. I'm not too sure if I picked a good time to start though. I feel like there might be a few that would interest me.

Anyway, from first glance the one's I'm interested in are:

  • Seitokai Yakuindomo
  • Black Bullet
  • Buddy Complex
  • Captain Earth
  • Brynhildr in the Darkness
  • Maken-Ki Two (just for the hell of it)

I notice a lot of people seem to really be drawn to Pupa, but the concept seems to freak me out just a little bit. I guess that's the idea though considering it's a horror.

I know Nobunaga the Fool is currently streaming on Crunchyroll. The trailer doesn't look too interesting and the premise doesn't really make a lot of sense to me. It seems to have a little Mecha action in it though, and in my book Mechs are always a plus in my book, but I'm wondering if anyone else has had some initial reactions?

Good work on the list .

Think this season ill try more shows than last. an i think it was 28 at the start last season.Think came down to good 15 solid titles an some that were just above average.This season tho it slike last in reguards to shows i wount be intrested in is just easyer to list.

Not intrested in ..

Wooser no Sono Higurashi Kakusei-hen least for now.

Strange+ seen the 1st episode an its not for me.

Sakura Trick hmm not for me.

Minna Atsumare! Falcom Gakuen nope

Meitantei Rascal hmm no

an thats pretty much it. Ill try the rest for 3 episodes if i can an see whats out their. Already a few stand outs like Magical Warfare an Space Dandy .Plus a real surprise in Witch Craft Works... which is not on the list?

Post by Elfenlied1012 (557 posts) See mini bio Level 15

@Delphic: Nah I get you. There is such a huge back catalog it's almost better to just cherry pick that.

@Marshal Victory: It's less that I want to see Sakura than it is that I appreciate it's existence.

@Marshal Victory:

I don't know how I forgot to add that show after making a discussion thread. Sorry, I had double checked the list twice last week. Good eye. Though, I can't edit the article since it has no thread attached. I can edit the other Winter 2014 Guide's rough prototype.

@Delphic:

Don't try Pupa. It isn't good. Since you like Nobunaga the Fool, you should try Nobunagun. It's a bit different since it deals with reincarnations of famous historical figures.

@Elfenlied1012:

Golden Time was good. Yeah, anime series that set in college is pretty rare. Though, it's common in adult and H manga series.

Post by Elfenlied1012 (557 posts) See mini bio Level 15

@takashichea: Yeah, part of the appeal to ElfenLied Steins Gate and Golden time is just the age, and thus the maturity, of the characters all being college aged. As for H manga and Adult series, I tend to not indulge in that too much, it's just a touch too rapey for my blood to be honest.

Post by Marshal Victory (2,131 posts) See mini bio Level 13

@Elfenlied1012: Oh by no means is my no watch list for me to mean they should go away.Just these dont grab my attention or imagination. If they do for some one else thats great.The shorter list is just simpler than listing the rest of the winter 2014 season atm.My above average list is closest i get to prediction in a general way whats average an good.But like all things opinion they do vary.

@takashichea: I think it may have got looked over because you have Wizard Barristers: Benmashi Cecil an the name may have seemed the same. Wizard an witchs so to speek.An honestly main reason i caught it was because i was highly impressed with Witch Craft Works odd story an animaiton .

Thank you, Tom, for making this article have a thread. Now, I can edit it.

@Marshal Victory:

I edited the table. I haven't check Wizard yet, but I did watched Witch Craft. Left a comment in the discussion thread. I actually liked it.

@Elfenlied1012:

Ah, you gave me an idea. Let's make a list of anime series set in college. We help the community. It would fun.

@takashichea: It may compete with World Conquest: Stratagem Star in the wacky department.Both have solid animation an seem to so far have a decent plot.

@takashichea:

Alright off of memory it would include Golden Time, Steins Gate, Elfen Lied, supersonico, Eden of the East, Tatami Galaxy, Welcome to the NHK , Honey & Clover, Nodame Cantabile, Listen to papa, Horizon (technically), Genshiken, (RWBY maybe since in Beacon the freshmen are all 17?)

Anyone else know of some?
