Welcome to the Summer 2014 Anime Seasonal Guide! My teammates and I prepare lots of discussion threads for you guys and gals packed with awesome trailers. Check the synopsis and click on the links to view them and hit those discussion threads. Here are brief first impressions of the shows that attracted our attention.

Acura Max

A season ends and another one takes its place. But one thing remains the same and it it the diversity that each anime season brings with it. Spring was a fresh salad of different anime and this summer looks to be like a summer feast of a variety of anime. This season, I am watching Aldnoah.Zero for my mecha fix. For my second helping, I am also watching Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal for a serving of nostalgia. Finally I am topping it all off with a bit of horror in Tokyo Ghoul. This season looks like one that will sate the anime cravings of some that were satisfied with the spring season. Thank you all for reading my thoughts and I hope you all have fun watching these titles.

BigHeart711

There are a lot of interesting stuff this time around, despite me getting burnt out last season. Shouldn't happen again considering the potential of these shows that I have. The other shows that are on the top of my mind are Space Dandy's second season, Tokyo Ghoul, and Akame ga Kill with Francesca in my "shorts" slot and Prism Illya's second season on the bench, despite the first one being fun as well.

Although the schedule for the following show is going to span for at least a year, my main show will end up being Sailor Moon Crystal since I ended up becoming a fan of the original Sailor Moon back then and have been watching the uncut versions being released at HULU as of late. I really hope the series will be fun enough for me to stick around for over a year.

Takashichea

This summer season has more hyped up titles than last season. I still found spring season satifying because it had more action themed shows in comparison to the winter 2014 season. I loved Chaika, Black Bullet, and Knights of Sidonia from the spring season. There are many sequels which I'm looking forward to watching: Black Butler: Book of Circus, Sword Art Online 2, Free! Eternal Summer , Space Dandy 2, Sailor Moon, and Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 2wei!. Despite SAO II is overhyped and lack a compelling story, I still love the series' characters because I get to make fun of them. Free is unique because not many shows focus on sports and man service at the same time. The new shows I'll be trying out are Akame ga Kill, Tokyo Ghoul, and Tokyo ESP. With DocHaus calling Tokyo ESP his most anticipated show of the summer, I heard Akame ga Kill was going to be gruesome while Tokyo Ghoul's colorful but dark trailer reeled me in.

Let us know what shows make your watch list for this summer! We will have a comprehensive Simulcast Guide soon.

I must be very jaded on anime because none of this appeals to me. I'm not sure if I'm disliking anime more or if anime is disliking me more.

I'm still interested in seeing how (or if) Sailor Moon has been updated.

@Marshal Victory:

I didn't finish Hamatora yet. I should catch during this weekend after finals.

My ranking for Spring

  1. Knights of Sidonia
  2. Chaika
  3. World is Still Beautiful
  4. Stardust Crusaders
  5. Black Bullet
  6. Kamigami no Asobi
  7. Soul Eater Not
  8. The Irregular at a Magical High School
  9. Akuma no Riddle
  10. If her Flag Breaks
  11. Blade and Soul

@Lurkero:

A lot of folks said Spring was full of lackluster titles. I guess it didn't have a lot hyped up shows like the summer. I did found some shows I like. I don't think I know your favorite genre or if you don't have a particular favorite.

@takashichea: Would be hard for me to list in order my favorites from spring. The original list got cut down alot as the season went on. From stuff that was just gona wait an watch later to just dropped.

Would say shows looked forward to each week on average were Chaika - The Coffin Princess, Knights of Sidonia, Black Bullet and Kindaichi Case Files Returns. Not counting Fairy Tail since its a staple for me.

Shows that dropped in quality it seems but I kept watching, Kanojo ga Flag wo Oraretara , The Irregular at a Magical High School an Date a Live II an at some point was good enuff to watch.

Shows I'm surprised I liked Nanana's Buried Treasure , No Game, No Life, and World is Still Beautiful

A yaoi anime?, I didn't expect that, I thought the genre was restricted to hentai series, how ignorant of me.

The only new shows I'm excited about are Terror in Resonance and Tokyo Ghoul. I don't know if I want to watch more Persona 4 (even if it's somewhat different), and the rest are up in the air. I will watch every first episode to see if I can be swayed.

@Dekken: Yaoi just means "boys love" not "boys doin' it dirty"

  • Shirogane no Ishi: Argevollen

  • Akame ga Kill!
  • Re: Hamatora
  • Tokyo ESP

@Dekken: @YotaruVegeta:

The seasonal guides don't have hentai, but some of the series can be based on eroge visual novels or erotic manga series:

@Marshal Victory:

I forgot to include Nanana's Buried Treasure and No Game, No Life. Thanks for the reminder.

@Supreme Marvel:

I better see you in the SAO discussion!

@YotaruVegeta: @takashichea: Oh I see, thanks for the explanation.

@Dekken: @YotaruVegeta:

oh one more thing. The spring season had 3 yuri esque shows: Inugami-san to Nekoyama-san, Soul Eater Not!, and Riddle Story of Devil. For summer, I don't think I see yuri but 2 yaoi shows.

I think it's great the anime industry is embracing both sexual orientations.

@takashichea:

Of course you will.

@Supreme Marvel:

All right, we need more folks. Looks like Akame ga Kill and Tokyo ESP is Anime Vice's most anticipated, new show.

Post by hitsusatsu11 (10,747 posts) See mini bio Level 20

My favorites from spring were:

1 Black Bullet

2 Chaika

3 Brynhildr

4 Jojo

5 Date a Live 2

6 Blade and Soul

7 Akuma no Riddle

8 Mahouka

Watched the first epp of Tokyo Ghoul so far this season, was pretty good. Will probably watch the new Sailor Moon, keep watching Mahouka and Jojo and marathon the new Monogatari whenever that comes out.

Otherwise im open to eventually at least check out almost everything this season, aside from Free which is fujoshi garbage and SAO which is just garbage, imo of course.

Thanks for adding the missing genre to the wiki page. Whenever you have time, I encourage new folks to check the summer guide and hit discussion threads if you like.

@hitsusatsu11:

I would have place Black Bullet higher if they didn't rushed and cram so much stuff. 2 Character Deaths in a row didn't warrant much sympathy because the build up wasn't enough. Was Brynhildr your best harem series for this year? It was for me since it did something unique that no other harem shows did. Kill off a love interest.

Post by hitsusatsu11 (10,747 posts) See mini bio Level 20

@takashichea: Hmm idk. While I like Brynhildr better Id probably still give that title to DAL, since the harem aspect is so prominent and the girls are at least as good, probably better than Brynhildr. Then there's also BB to consider, which I feel is harem, though not overt- a soft harem if u will.

Very Interested

  • Ao Haru Ride
  • Terror in Residence
  • Tokyo Ghoul
  • Shonen Hollywood

Mild Interest Because of the Content

  • Super Radical Gag Family
  • Mobile Suit Gundam-san
  • Re: Hamatora
  • Barakamon

Mild Interest Because of the Studio

  • Sword Art Online II
  • Aldonoah.Zero
  • Akame ga Kill
  • Glasslip

This season has more stuff that seems like it could be good than I usually expect. I've got a bad feeling that most of the stuff I'm very interested in either won't be simulcast period or will be on services I don't like to use like Hulu.

@takashichea:

Are Inugami-san to Nekoyama-san and Soul Eater Not! yuri? Didn't know!
