I watched the first as I do with most new animé. Just didn't keep me interested enough.

@Supreme Marvel:

It's no problem. They should have made the first episode better. It was too sleepy, and it didn't have enough action. Magi is one of those you have muscled through like K if you're interested to see how it develops. The manga does have good concepts like slavery and poverty that was covered. The anime just needs to execute it better. The series may look all innocent and cheery, but there will dark things if the anime will continue past the Balbadd Arc, Alibaba's story.

@takashichea: At least am giving K another go.

Cutest Scene
Cutest Scene
Morgiana's crazy scene
Morgiana's crazy scene

This episode had the most cuteness and humorous moments. I just love how Morgiana just kidnap Alibaba and carry him bridal style. Alibaba's origin story reflects how poverty and family can affect a person. Cassim who is raised by an abusive father continues to do bad things in order to help people. He's the opposite of Alibaba.

So I finally started watching this and checked out the first episode, what a wacky show, but definitely in a good way.

What? Were we watching the same thing? There was a giant headless blue guy wrestling with a giant man-eating plant! What more do you want?!

I thought it was a great first episode. It set up the world pretty well, while leaving a lot of things up in the air, so I'm already pretty eager to jump into episode 2.

@Daniel_Newton:

Cool, I hope Aladdin's cuteness and his hidden pervertedness didn't turn you away. God damn that Aladdin. He's only 12, but that's not stopping him. No way, his little chibi self almost protects him. How was Alibaba and Morgiana? I loved Morgiana, and I thought she was a tsundere. Nah, she's just quiet and puffs her face. Ah, I was like, "Aw."

By the way, I noticed you have been replacing Crunchyroll with Hulu. I'll leave that to you. I was never a fan of HULU. Can't get even get screenshots. Though, the Aniplex watermark or something else is always on Magi. I'm helpless and have to hunt images.

@takashichea: I like all three of the main characters, I'm four episodes in and all three of them are still pretty mysterious. Aladdin genuinely appears to know nothing about himself, while Alibaba is keeping to himself, though he has already said he will tell Aladdin everything. I kind of hope he keeps some of his past to himself for now though to keep things interesting. Morgiana seems like the kind of character who bottles up her emotions and is liable to explode without warning--at least that's the impression I'm getting--she should be fun to watch regardless.

I was pretty surprised how dark Magi gets in spots, like the flashback showing that asshat lord jabbing a sword in Morgiana's face. It definitely adds a little shock value I wasn't expecting.

Oh, I added a Hulu synopsis to one of the episodes because it didn't have one, and I can't access Magi episodes on Crunchyroll, it's not available in the UK. I can get the information from Hulu though so I did. It looks like they use the same information on both sites anyway.

@Daniel_Newton:

You'll see how Alibaba is so indecisive later on. His past will haunt him for sure just like Morgiana's.

Oh, I didn't know Crunchyroll didn't air in the U.K. Man, no wonder my Austrailia wiki editors in Sket Dance Wikia couldn't find the show legally.

That's what I love about Magi, it's innocent on the outside, but it's dark with its theme, the gap between the rich and poor with a mix of slavery. It's like Madoka Magica. It pops out at you. I wasn't expected the Jamil doing that to poor Morgiana. I cringe at that scene a bit.

I wish the anime doesn't censor itself. That's the thing is eating me up. Though, I was pretty shocked with Paimon showing full frontal nudity with her breasts. This anime is in the family hour in Japan. I don't know about mindset in Japan with their censorship. It's crazy since you have a totally ecchi anime like To Love Ru Darkness playing in the same season but suffering from censorship.

It may have to do with the Hinduism and its mythology since genies are normally naked.

Wiki

Oh yeah, when you catch up, I need to talk to you about the Djinn Equip and Dungeon Conqueror concepts along with the Djinn Metal object. Whether we should combine the wiki pages or not. Some of them like the first two concepts are so similar to each other. I'm not sure what to do given we don't have much info on it.

Crunchyroll is pretty good here but the primary focus has always been the US.

Sure, I'll take a look when I'm caught up.

@takashichea: I checked into what ya said about 12 episodes... an looks like thats it i couldnt check yup only 12 :( way the stroy is progressing now it feels a bit rushed to .Some how we can blame Disney for this right?

@Marshal Victory:

Weird, I didn't noticed your response. I blame AV for the PM glitch and myself for not being active enough. Grr!

Speaking of Disney, I'm a big fan of Aladdin, but when I read the real story, I was pretty disillusioned back in middle school. Aladdin wasn't the good guy. He was pretty selfish.

I don't want to play the blame game, but they really need to fix their pacing. There are over 100 chapters in the manga if they keep going like this, they will end up like Soul Eater's anime adaptation. I don't know why companies keep repeating this mistake. Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood and the original FMA was the exception.

Episode 9

It was interesting to see how Alibaba compare to Sinbad. Sinbad is an experienced, confident ruler while Alibaba didn't believe in himself when taking the throne. I loved that look on Morgiana's face when she sees Masrur just dash through everyone. Like the earlier episodes, this one felt rushed.

Episode 10

Judal's confident smile
Judal's confident smile

The fight between Aladdin & Ugo against Judal is awesome. Like Sinbad to Alibaba, Judal is much experienced than Aladdin. I like Judal's cocky personality. The guy reminds me of Kenny from Bleach who is always itching for a fight. Somehow, Ugo overwhelmed Judal in the end. Plus, the animation in the fight was satisfying.

@takashichea: some maybe good news...

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2012-12-16/japan-animation-tv-ranking-december-3-9

is reporting for the second time Magi has made the top 10! Really hope this means a second season.The plot pace now would sugest it.Tho in hind sight they really really could have done a better job on pacing by just slowing it down an seting up the fights a little um Bleach like.But i fear long story archs in modern days are a thing of the past.

Episode 11

Kougyoku, rockin' the yandere look
Kougyoku, rockin' the yandere look

We have a lovely, crazy, psychotic princess from the Kou Empire. Love her yandere look, but when she got smitten by Sinbad, she totally turned tsundere. I thought the skirmish that she caused would have been a longer battle, but it ended anticlimactically.

Episode 12

My little sister pointed out something cool in the scene where Alibaba and Kassim were arguing how to save the country.

Alibaba is in the light while Kassim is in the shadows.

Um 13 seems to have a bit of a animtion movemnt quality drop. almost like it was rushed .Looks like the series is ongoing still .Which is good news because its starting to get good again.

@takashichea: 14 gets some things wrong on a political sence. might have been translation or common error of version i seen. Look for how republic is used an democracy.

Other than that awsome episode.

@Marshal Victory:

I finished episode 13, and I haven't started on episode 14 yet. Crunchyroll airs those episodes on Wednesday. I did see the animation going down a bit. Plus, there were some censorship.

Alibaba finally got his mojo going, and Morgiana got some action. Oh, I find the elephant guy's stoned face humorous.

Post by Marshal Victory (1,913 posts) See mini bio Level 13

@takashichea: Animation quality ( like frames per movement) get better in 14 . So maybe 13 was a filller animation episode.Where another studio steps in to fill in for the main studio? Saw alot fo that in Zettai Karen Children in the latter half of the series.

Hmm wonder if crunchyrol did the edit... the second pic well version i seen did not have the fog of censor.

Post by Marshal Victory (1,913 posts) See mini bio Level 13

Animation quality got better again in 15 so maybe they just needed the filer animations .Really happy to see magi ongoing now. More bloody than i expected. i will say with out spoilers Kashim says some things worthy of discussion.

Alibaba's Answer was a busy episode. Lots of talk and debate about the future of Balbadd. I wanted Alibaba to be king since he is chosen by Aladdin. For his character, his alternative solution to a republic suited him better. Alibaba is not confident in his abilities and bags on himself. Like everyone says, he is somewhat of a FOIL to Sinbad who is more experienced and confident.

I'm looking forward to Kasshim's answer.
