Now, he has a task for his son that no other person can accomplish. That burden is to pilot the Evangelion Unit-01 and save all humanity from complete extinction. Unprepared, Shinji is sent out to fight for us against the Angels. It all rests on the shoulders of a boy who is wondering, "Why did I come?".

Summary

Just as teenager Shinji Ikari arrives in Tokyo-3 a being known as an Angel appears and lays siege to the city. Amonst the battle between the military and the angel Shinji is picked up by Misato Katsuragi. Misato works at N.E.R.V. with Shinj's father Gendo, a mysterious organisation who apparently exists to fight the angels. While visibly demonstrating their estranged father-son relationship Shinji struggles to accept his father's 'request' to pilot the mecha 'Eva - 01'. Therefore Gendo sends for Ayanami Rei, who we see is a seriously injured young girl.

The angel lands a direct hit on N.E.R.V,'s base causing debri to crash towards Shinji. But the apparently inactive Eva moves and blocks the debri from hurting Shinji. Shinji, having seen the physical pain that Rei is in, chooses to pilot the Eva...
