When he is mortally wounded in an accident, Professor Koakishi is restored to life in an android body, believing that a good heart does not deserve to die before its time. But Koakishi's laboratory is attacked one stormy night by an unknown assailant. As his daughter Mitsuko escapes the flames, the whole incident is being watched by a young boy, Jiro, from a vantage point in the forest. Jiro is the last of Koakishi's creations, a robot created to save humankind, Mitsuko in particular. Fighting off the robot minions of the "dark professor" Gill, Jiro transforms into Kikaider, a superpowerful android ready to fight for good. One of Cyborg 009-creator Shotaro Ishinomori's most popular live-action creations, Kikaider was a relative latecomer to anime, not animated until after its creator's death. The box set of the DVD came with a 25-minute bonus episode, Kikaider 01: The Boy with a Guitar (Guitar o Motta Shonen, 2003), directed by Naoyuki Konno.
