Tom Writes All Your Names In The Death Note

Dig Deeper into Death Note

A shounen franchise of enormous popularity, Death Note started with Tsugumi Ohba's manga, illustrated by the popular artist Takeshi Obata. The series is essentially an extended police chase thriller, but with added twists, including the existence of Shinigami (death gods) who can control the death of humans.

Is this the first video of you in the new office? It's the first I've seen of you there. Are you usually there?
CrazyCanuckon Sept. 21, 2010 at 4:19 p.m.
I prefer the anime, not because I don't like reading but I like to see how the anime brings certain things to life through movement, color, and sound.

Good vid too Tom!

Wait, what does Coventry have to do with anything? Why did that come up?
I LIVE IN COVENTRY!

Also, nice to see you doing a video in the Whiskey basement, did you do that while visiting for the live show or will you be visiting more often?

yu yu hakasho, I read a few pager of the manga but the fighting shows up a lot  better in the anime.  Generally if the anime/manga has a lot of fighting the anime will be more enjoyable.

Oh and as for the question, I've watched all of the Highschool of the Dead anime and just checked the manga out, and despite the manga being both more gory and having more nudity, I prefer the anime. After seeing it in anime form the manga version seems a bit... rushed.

Oh and I prefer the Bleach anime (excluding the bad filler) but I'm staying right up to date with it so I'm reading the manga.

Oh great, more discussion of VIZ manga. (sarcasm)

Code Geass
The Code Geass anime is far superior than any of the manga iterations.

I'm normally a reader. I would much rather have a book than watch something one TV. One of the numerous reason I hold VIZ in such contempt for putting out the manga with such low quality in accuracy.

It's a difficult task to find many animes that are better than the manga when many animes are based off mangas. You will find that when mangas are based an anime that the pattern is reversed, such as Gurren Lagann.

As far as the video goes. Need to tune down the music or tune up his dialog. It was a little hard to hear Tom at first due to the music over his spoken words.

much like the relationship of American movies and video games, it depends ALMOST entirely on which came first.

When an anime is based off of a manga, it is usually when the manga is still running, and then the anime catches up to the manga, which results in one of four possibilities. The first is filler, motherf&#*ing filler, i HATE filler A LOT, because it literally CAN'T progress the story and therefore it ends up being redundant and (more importantly) boring, i've heard that one of the Bleach filler arcs is pretty good put i kind of doubt it .

Of course it can also take the DBZ route, y'know, dragging every single action out to the point where entire episodes are devoted entirely to goku's constipated face while he powers up, which just gets annoying.

OR it can pull an FMA, taking the story entirely in it's own direction, making up it's own ending and story and ending up completly differnt from the original manga. This is unsurprisingly the best type of adaptation, because it can still be similar enough to the orignal while managing to keep you guessing in both versions (although i like the manga the most).

Death note falls into the third option, but it doesn't take it to the same extreme FMA does, for the most part the differences are minor things that don't really affect the story that much, and i appreciate that. Also, the manga version of death note is pretty damn boring, it just drags on and gets kind of annoying. (although the manga had the better ending)

The only example i personally have seen of the manga coming after the anime is Code Geass, and it's manga adaptations SUCK, they start off as interesting (the best is nightmare of nunnally) but they're so fast paced and confusing, and they change too many details (Cornelia isn't even IN the main adaptation (right? it's been awhile)) and they just end up being stupid
yuetheguardianon Sept. 21, 2010 at 7:57 p.m.

Cardcaptor Sakura in my opinions anime was better then the manga, the pacing was better and changed up quite alot and kept people who read the manga guessing abit. Also the animes movie ending is supierior to the mangas imo.
Count_Zeroon Sept. 21, 2010 at 8:53 p.m.
Cases where the anime is better than the manga. Just going by one example from stuff I've reviewed - Magic Knight Rayearth. Season one was, basically, four volumes long, with our heroes taking on one of the Four Generals of the villain, Zagato per volume, and each General getting one shot, and then being out of it - either being Befrended by our heroes and then wandering off on their merry way, or getting executed for their failure by the villain.

In the show, on the other hand, they gave the villains more screen time and instead of stretching out the fights and action sequences that existed in the Manga, they had each General take several attempts at the characters, and used these additional opportunities to flesh out both the villains and the heroes - and other supporting cast members - a little more.

nice.video.But I was kinda insulted at how you stored and took out your manga.you just demped it out onto the table! That could cause bending. You need to treat them with care.

Most of SHAFT's animes (EX Hidamari Sketch and Negima!?) of a step up from the Manga counterparts since they do a lot more visual actions and artistic design.

@InfiniteGeass: I'm up there a lot. SF's a quick plane trip from LA.

@CrazyCanuck: Thanks... judging by your icon, I'm going to guess that FMA fits into that.

@Newten: Heh... isn't Coventry always understood to be SF's sister city?

Yeah, we did this while I was at the Big Live Show. I've got a flip cam, so more videos on the way.

@Tom_Pinchuk: No seriously, what did Cov have to do with anything in that video? I'm going paranoid now.
I wish it was SF's sister city, I'm sure that would somehow make it way better.

Ahh good stuff, users have wanted new video content for a long time Tom, hope you think of some entertaining stuff sir.

This!

Also, Pinchuck mentioned "latitude" in the video. The UK area made for best "latitude" globe spinning action. Going from SF to Japan was not an optimal route.
Daniel_Newton moderator on Sept. 22, 2010 at 11:39 a.m.
@Lemon: It's just really weird to see Coventry mentioned anywhere, let alone on a Whiskey Media site. And London or Birmingham would have done fine... you're behind this aren't you? God damn it Steve you made me paranoid on purpose.
