Akaya Kirihara is second year tennis player at Rikkaidai Jr.high. He has a bad habit of injuring his opponents by hitting the tennis ball at parts of their body mainly their knees. Kirihara had a tennis match with captain Kippei Tachibana of Fudomine but easily won because he had hurt Tachibana's ankle. When Kirihara play a match against Fuji, he hit him in the chest and knee and once in the head causing Fuji to loose his sight for the rest of the game. In the end Fuji won against Kirihara.
Awhile after that Kirihara realized what he was doing was wrong, he decide to change and stop hurt people in tennis matches. At the tennis camp Kirihara had a conversation with An Tachibana who was angry at him for what he did to her brother. Kirihara told her he was different but shortly after that he decide to say something mean about An's brother which resulted in An getting angry at him. She tried to slap him but missed since he step back to avoid it however in doing so he fell down the steps. He still uses his "devil mode" in matches but rarely hurts other players. His devil mode advances when he plays against Krauser in the ova series. In his new devil mode, Kirihara's body is red and his hair is white as well is speed increases. This form also appears when him and Yanagi play against Kaidou and Inui. Kirihara ends up sending Kaidou to turn into his devil mode when Inui gets hit multiple times by Kirihara. Him and Yanagi end up winning do to Inui loosing consciousness.
