Yosho's wife and Tenchi's grandmother.
Note: Some of the information included in this page comes from one of three novels written by Tenchi Muyo creator Masaki Kajishima called the Shin Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-ohki! Novels, which cover details on characters and elements of the series not explored within the OVA series.
Airi is the second wife of Jurai prince Yosho, mother to Kiyone and grandmother to Tennyo and Tenchi. She is the head of Jurai's sector office of the Galaxy Police and is the chairwoman of the Galaxy Police Academy. Airi is part of the Airain race, an alien race that worship the Choushin and despise the people of Jurai due to their belief that the planet is holding Tsunami selfishly for themselves. Her father is a prominent priest and ruler on their planet and both are descendants of the founder of their culture.
Airi and Yosho met years earlier at the Galaxy Academy, the former serving as Yosho's tour guide at the facility. After spending a lot of time together, the two fell in love and Yosho would eventually reveal his true identity as part of Jurai royalty. Yosho's temperament became more mild as he interacted with Airi, yet would return to being reserved each time the two reunited after Yosho had been on Jurai.
Originally, Airi was arranged to marry a member of Jurai's Tatsuki family, which her people sought to use as a move to reclaim Tsunami. But upon discovering she was pregnant with Yosho's child, Airi realized her people would have the child killed if they discovered it. Before returning to her home world Airai, Airi removed the embryo of her child from her body and placed it in stasis. She then broke off her arranged marriage and defected to the Galaxy Academy. Airi would later restore the embryo within her body and gave birth to a girl named Minaho. She also came into contact with Seto Kamiki Jurai, the major power backing the planet's Royal Family, as the two became very close.
Years after Yosho left for Earth and his first wife Kasumi died, he contacted an old friend at the Galaxy Academy to arrange to meet some of his family in space. He reunited with Airi and discovered the existence of his daughter Minaho, with the two later having a common law marriage. Airi would later give birth to a second daughter, Kiyone. Her marriage to Yosho is top secret, known only to the extended Masaki family on Earth, Jurai's Royal Family and Airi's circle of friends and confidante. Knowledge of the affair to others would result in a major political bomb due to the hostilities between Jurai and Airai.
Airi was created as a supporting character for Masaki Kajishima's Tenchi Muyo anime, manga and novel franchise. She first appeared in the second of Kajishima's Shin Tenchi-Muyo! Ryo-ohki novels that detailed on the origins of Yosho's character. Airi would be integrated into the OVA anime continuity, appearing in the third OVA series and Tenchi Muyo GXP. She was voiced by Sakiko Tamagawa in Japanese and Kari Wahlgren in English.
Airi has green hair and yellow eyes, with her hair normally wrapped in a white hair bun. She is normally seen dressed in orange clothing consisting of a long-sleeved shirt and long skirt.
Airi is a woman with a playful attitude who often likes to play jokes on those she encounters, being a co-conspirator of the morbid letter that her daughter Kiyone left for Tenchi. She has a love for cooking and is usually seen cooking at restaurants within the Galaxy Police to practice her craft and is a master of the Neo-Academy style, a martial art used to intimidate scientists and philosophers during meetings. She does absolutely hate being called an old woman or having the fact she is a grandmother be mentioned, as she is very self-conscious about her age and will display threatening behavior towards whomever refers to her as old.
Airi mostly serves a supporting role in her appearances within the third OVA series and GXP. She usually makes appearances on Earth to reunite with Yosho, as she is otherwise occupied with her duties at the Galaxy Police. She adores her grandson Tenchi when the two meet to discuss his arranged marriage with Noike. She is also shown to support Seina Yamada's admission into the Galaxy Police despite opposition to the boy's admission due to being born on Earth, believing the boy's unnatural ability to attract space pirates would aid in efforts to halt piracy in the galaxy.
