Livin' Large? Afro Samurai's scrawny!
Livin' Large? Afro Samurai's scrawny!
I've never eaten at Church's Chicken-- the nearest one to me is in Woodland, WA, and I've heard it's good, but I doubt it's THAT good –but apparently fast-food fried chicken chain is teaming up with Bandai Namco to promote the Afro Samurai video game, which hits North American streets tomorrow.

So...we'll just ignore the obvious jokes about racism for now and read the press release. Apparently the game has already “gone gold,” which is interesting, since I didn't know there was a sales certification system for video games. Ahem. In the music industry, the RIAA certifies that an album has gone “gold” when it sells 500,000 copies. I'm not sure how much I believe that they've already got 500,000 preorders for the game, but, well, whatever it means, congratulations to Bandai Namco. (EDIT: I've been educated that "going gold" just means the game is complete and in the process of being replicated and distributed. Thanks, HSaabedra!)

Then there's some interesting theorizing on gamers as a target audience:

“Gamers are an emerging loyal fan base akin to those of traditional sports like football or basketball. According to the Entertainment Software Association, 65% of American households play computer or video games. We made a strategic decision to be more steadfast in spending time, research and money in targeting to this growing influential segment.”

As for Church' addition to promoting the game, they're running a sweepstakes that you can win a bunch of money or an Afro Samurai iPod in. Enjoy!

Church's Chicken is usually  a hit or miss, depends on the people working there.

In the context of video and PC games, "going gold" is a phrase used to describe the master disc containing the finished game being shipped off for replication and shipment to retail.

Church's Chicken is mainly a Southwest chain owing to its roots in Texas, so its no surprise that the majority of people haven't heard of it outside the state and Louisiana
